Buffalo Ford Dealers Donate To Good Causes

Boys and Girls Club and Homespace Inc. Get Keys To New Vans

Ford dealers in Buffalo and Northern Pennsylvania teamed up to continue a 15 year tradition.  As part of the Ford's Friendship Express program, the Boys and Girls Club and Homespace Inc. each received a 2010 Econoline Van Thursday at Delaware Park.

This is the 15th anniversary of the program.  Since 1996, the Friendship Express program has donated over 60 vehicles each year to different charities.

West Herr President Scott Bieler was on hand along with other Ford representatives.

"We try to pick organizations with a positive impact on the community and that affect a lot of people," Bieler told the Buffalo News.

The vans will be used to help charity participants learn about the Buffalo area and meet their basic needs, according to charity representatives.

The Boys & Girls Club of America is a national organization serving underprivileged children between the ages of 6-18. Homespace Inc. is a local charity aimed at assisting pregnant teens and teenage mothers.

This is just one of the many charity ventures West Herr is involved with.  Recently multiple West Herr Employees set up a rest stop with food and beverages at the Ride For Roswell. Pictures are available here.

Starry Night In The Garden

Erie County Botanical Gardens Benefit Gains Massive Local Support

The Erie County Botanical Gardens were rocking last night with help from some fine Buffalonians.  Local radio station Star 102.5 sponsored "The Starry Nights In The Garden" concert to raise money for the gardens.  West Herr also sponsored the event and had 5 different  Toyota vehicles on display.

"We just want to support the area and help rejuvenate the look of Buffalo," said Tom Fogarty, General Manager of West Herr Toyota and Scion in Orchard Park.Western New Yorkers enjoying food, music and refreshments at the Botanical Gardens.

National recording artists Collective Soul headlined with support from Alex Band of The Calling, Serena Ryder and Melanie Fiona.

Concert goers also indulged in food, wine and other beverages.  Local brew JW Dundee's was on serving their Summer Wheat Ale.

West Herr had 5 different cars on hand including a brand new 2011 Toyota Sienna, a Prius and a 4 runner.

One lucky contestant even got to sit in the back of a Toyota Tundra pick up for the entire concert.  The "Best Seat In The House" contest winner was also served food in the pick up during the concert.

Since 2000, Star 102.5 has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Botannical Gardens.  The Gardens are considered by many to be one of the crowning architectural jewels of the area.  They were designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted, over 100 years ago.

Time to Ride For Roswell

Annual Cycling Fundraiser To Be Held Next Weekend in Buffalo

It's that time of year to ride for a good cause.  The 15th Annual Ride For Roswell will take place Saturday June 26th in an effort to raise money for cancer research.

The Ride is celebrating it's 15th Anniversary. The Ride has raised more than $10.7 million for Roswell Park Cancer Institute since its inception 15 years ago.

Now drawing pledges and participants from across the country and Canada, The Ride For Roswell uses its collective strength to help ensure cancer research is always funded and that the most advanced treatments and world-class care are always available to patients.

The West Herr Auto Group is proud to be participating again.  All of us at West Herr have been touched by cancer in some manner.  We will be operating a rest stop along the bike route in Ellicott Creek Park (Shelter #15) from 8AM-12:30PM.

Take a look at our photos from last year's event here.

All along, Roswell has been offering multiple training events and other types of preparation for riders. The final ride preparation training event will take place this Saturday at University of Buffalo's North Campus. Our recent blog post showed how Roswell offered training to riders on emergency weather related situations.

All routes with the exception of the Peloton start and end at University at Buffalo North Campus (Baird Point area) – Amherst, NY. The Peloton starts at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and ends at UB’s Baird Point.  Maps are avaiable at the ride website.

There is still time left to donate to a rider or volunteer.  To get involved visit the Ride for Roswell website today.

Nissan: Made In America

Nissan LEAF Batteries To Create Jobs and Progess in America

The Nissan LEAF is doing more than just bringing zero emissions driving, it's creating jobs in America too.  Last month Nissan broke ground on a new project that will bring LEAF battery production to their Smyrna, TN plant.

Full production begins in 2012 and is expected create approxiametely 1,300 new jobs.A zero emissions charge station for the Nissan LEAF

At 1.3 million square feet at full capacity he battery plant will be one of the largest in North America.  In order to expedite LEAF production, the battery plant will be placed next to the actual car plant.  All together, the plants will be capable of producing 150,000 electric cars annually.

"Production of Nissan LEAF and lithium-ion batteries in Smyrna brings the United States closer to its goal of energy independence, creates green jobs and helps sustain American manufacturing," said Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.

The Nissan LEAF was recently unveiled to the public at a conference in Japan as we covered recently.  Check out a full video of Wall Street Journal's test drive of the LEAF here:

Approximately 13,000 U.S. consumers have placed a reservation for Nissan LEAF since reservations opened on April 20. The reservation process, which is open to the general public via NissanUsa.com, is the first step in securing a place on the list to purchase or lease Nissan LEAF.

Nissan LEAF begins rolling out to select markets in the United States, Japan and Europe in December, with increased availability beginning in spring 2011, and full market rollout in 2012.

When the LEAF hits Buffalo, West Herr Nissan in Orchard Park will be THE spot.  We can't wait to be the central spot for zero emissions driving in Western New York.

Support The Gus Macker Tournament

West Herr Proud To Be Involved with Annual Basketball Tournament

It's summer, meaning it's time for 3 on 3 basketball.  The Buffalo Police Athletic League (PAL) and Kids Escaping Drugs will again be hosting the annual Gus Macker Basketball Tournament.  The event will take place June 26-27 at 65 Niagara Square in Buffalo.

See some highlights from last year's event

This tagline for this year's event is "Making The World a Better Place to Live" and the PAL aims to hold true to that promise.  They said:

100% of all proceeds from the event will directly benefit the children of our community through the programs of PAL. The focus and goal of PAL’s core programming it to build strong athletic, cultural, social and recreational opportunities that area youth are attracted and held to; while adding age appropriate prevention and education to each activity.

All tournament games are 3 on 3 and there is a bracket system in place until a champion is crowned.  The PAL provides board certified referees for the games and Wegman's will even sponsor a warm up fitness routine to help players avoid cramps and injuries.

In addition the cocession stands will be expanding to include Applebees, Just Pizza, and Sahlens’s Hot Dogs

West Herr is proud to be involved with the event yet again.  Few people know how much volunteer work goes into the event.  As we noted in a blog post from last year's event, there were over 700 volunteers.  Truly a testament to the generous people of Western New York.

The tournament started in 1974 in a Lowell, MI driveway as Scott and Mitch McNeal found 18 friends and played for an $18 purse.  Today the tournament takes place in over 75 cities and draws a total of 1.7 million spectators attending.  The Gus Macker site says the tournament continues with the following objectives in mind:

  • A Wholesome, family-oriented event.
  • A tournament designed by players for players
  • A value to sponsors.
  • An outstanding fund-raising event for the local community.
  • A major media sporting event.
  • Entertaining for the spectators.

For more info about the history, rules, and regulations visit the general tournament website here.  For more information on how to register a team or Buffalo specific questions, visit the local site here.

We hope to see you there!

The extended West Herr Military Family

These are a few short blurbs from West Herr team members about the military personnel in their lives.  We thank everyone for their contributions and service.

My son Jay Epolito is a Corporal in the Marines, he graduated early from high school to serve our country, and he was only 18 when he did his first tour in Iraq. He left as a boy and returned a man; he saw things that you and I will never see.

My son served 2 more tours 1 in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan. Life for my son will never be the same he was forced to grow up really fast.  He is still in The Marines and proud of it!!!  I am a MOM (Mom Of a Marine) and my husband is a DOM (Dad Of a Marine) and we are proud of it!!!!  Thank you to all the men and women who have and do server our country.

-Cheryl Epolito

After making the United States Army his career, William T. Furgala Sr. will be retiring as a Lt. Colonel.  Thank you Dad for your 24 years of service!

-Kathleen Furgala
Internet Sales Consultant at West Herr Ford Lincoln Mercury

Being a former military wife myself, my husband served in the US Navy for eight years, I would like to say that it is important to support the families left behind as well. My husband made several trips overseas, many times to an active war zone and the support of those around me really helped pass the time.

We hope you take the time to thank and honor all those who have served our nation whether past or present this Memorial Day along with supporting the loved ones left behind at home

West Herr's Own Michael Wittlinger

This is the story of Michael Wittlinger, lot attendant at West Herr Honda in Lockport.  We are proud to have Michael on board with us.

I joined the New York Air National Guard in May of 1972.  I was assigned to the 107th Airlift Wing, Civil Engineering section as an Administration Specialist.  My job was mainly administrative duties.  I served in this assignment for 14 years, serving one weekend a month and two weeks annual training each summer. Pictured:Col. Patrick Gallivan, Mike Wittlinger and Chief Master Sargeant Richard King.

In November of 1986, I was selected for an active duty position as an Administration Specialist with the Accounting and Finance office.  I performed the same administrative duties along with assisting in payroll.  I was assigned there until August 1988, when I accepted a Human Resource Position.  In this position, I worked with enlistments, separations, and retirements.

Along with my duties in the department, I trained for the deployable Human Resource team.  This training eventually took me to France in 1998, and to Spain in 2004 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  Shortly after returning from overseas, I was assigned to the position of Personnel Systems Manager (HR).  This position involved analysis of data to ensure the accuracy of the system.

I retired in October 2009, as a Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) with over 23 years of active duty and a total of 37 years of service.  My many awards include two Air Force Commendation Medals, two Air Force Achievement Medals, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, and the New York State Commendation Medal.

I take great pride in serving our country all those years and am thankful for those who served with me.  This Memorial Day, let’s remember all those who sacrificed so much and thank all those who still serve.

Evert Hoffman- Pearl Harbor Survivor

Major Evert E. Hoffman is the grandfather of Erik Brungard, sales consultant at West Herr Honda.  Erik was kind enough to share his Grandfather's story with us.

Evert Hoffman was a Pearl Harbor Survivor.  On that fateful morning, he was eating breakfast when attacked.

When my mother took my grandparents to Hawaii, my mother saw the spot the very spot where it happened.  She said it was an OPEN field with no cover. Clearly, he was a very brave man.  He loved his country and family.

Hoffman was stationed in Beppu Japan in the 19th Infantry division.  His division was the first group of soliders sent to Korea.  My mother and Grandparents also lived in Panama canal zone and when they came back stateside he was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ.

There he worked for HQ and then became the Range Officer; a position he loved.  He worked as the there until he retired from the Army and then went back to Fort Dix to still be in charge as the Range Officer.

My grandfather loved his country and I am happy to honor him.

Derek Fogarty- Proud Marine and Celebrated Son

This was sent to us by Tom Fogarty, General Manager at West Herr Toyota of Orchard Park, about his son Derek.  Derek is a former West Herr employee and now serves in the United States Marines.

When I asked my son Derek why he chose the Armed Forces he said, "Dad, who else would you rather have defend our country than your son?"

It's not easy being the parent of this brave child, now a man, but I'll tell you we're proud of him and his decision to help protect our country's freedom.

Derek J. Fogarty is a new US Marine.  He is 22 years old and recently graduated from The US Marine Corp at Parris Island, South Carolina, in 2010.

He also received additional training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Derek has chosen his Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) as a 0311 which is his job code as a Rifleman. It is the primary infantry MOS for the Marine Corps.

Derek will start additional training here at the Niagara Falls Air Force base in May. He will then be sent to California for more extensive training and most likely see his first duties overseas in the fall of 2010.

We are extremely proud of Derek.  As a Dad that is now starting to understand the commitment that these young people make I thought I’d share this with you as a “thinking aid” of how lucky we truly are.
