Name A Mustang, Drive One Home

Ford Opens Performance Packing Naming Contest to Facebook Fans

A string of creative words could earn you a 2012 Mustang.  All you need to do is visit the Ford Mustang Facebook page and submit your entry for naming the vehicle's performance package.

“We’re utilizing the power of social media to not only talk about what a fantastic package this is, but to also let Mustang fans across the country share a piece of it,” said Brian McClary, Ford social and emerging media specialist. “It’s a nontraditional approach to naming a piece of brand that millions of people identify with.”

Facebook fans can suggest a name on the Mustang Facebook page, and reach out to their friends in the social media world to help propel their pick to the top five names. A gallery on the Facebook page will let visitors see all of the choices that can be voted on. After the five most-voted names have been selected, Ford will choose the name that best shows off the personality of the package.

“The V6 Performance Package is a great example of what’s at the core of Mustang – fun, fast and affordable,” said Amy Marentic, Ford group marketing manager. “It makes sense for us to continue the accessibility of the package by having our fans help name it, and it’s a fun and unique way to engage enthusiasts.”

Aside from winning the car, the winner will also have the satisfaction of knowing his or her name will play a role in the iconic brand.  Names can be submitted through mid-December, when the contest comes to a close.

The Performance Package combines lightweight 305-horsepower all-aluminum V6, a 3:31 performance rear axle and Mustang GT-based suspension and braking components. Unique 19-inch wheels and Pirelli performance tires provide superb grip and aggressive appearance.

So visit the Mustang on Facebook to see a diagram of the package and submit your entry today!

Get Creative: Kia Might Give You $10,000

Kia Using Social Media For Talent Contest And Soul Promotion

Lately carmakers have been turning to social media not just for small promotions but for largescale events.  Ford recently launced the 2011 Explorer exclusively through Facebook, plus their Fiesta launch was primarily social media driven.  Kia is now joining the party with an upcoming contest that will also promote the Kia Soul.

Kia's "Who's Next?" talent contest will be organized purely through Youtube.  Contestants can submit videos themed around the Kia Soul and its "a new way to roll" tagline.

The contest will run through the end of September with the top two finalists flown to Los Angeles for the announcement of the grand prize winner, who will receive a $10,000 prize.

"Social media is an important part of the marketing strategy for Soul and engaging passionate enthusiasts in this space creates additional opportunities to build buzz through a new, interactive experience," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA.

The top eight submissions will be chosen by three YouTube celebrity judges, including SMOSH, ShayCarl and Lisa Nova, which then will be entered into a three-round voting process and chosen by viewers.

Kia's marketing philosophies are working.  Recently they won "Automotive Ad of the Year" by Nielsen for their famous Hamster ad. See that here:
