By the day’s end, after flagging down cars and promoting their products under a hot summer sun, the children had pocketed $200. All of it went to Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

These children, ranging in age from kindergarten to fifth grade and most of whom attend South Davis Elementary, grew up together in Orchard Park. If ever the sun was out and homework done, they’d be outside, playing together in the neighborhood.

But recently, cancer upended their young lives, touching two of the families in the neighborhood. Megan, Erin and Brendan discovered that their mother, Denise Sass, 39, has neuroblastoma. Joscelyn Wabick, 8, and Jude Wabick, 6, discovered that their grandmother has multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer. Suddenly their world was — and still is — filled with tests, diagnoses and many hours spent in hospitals.

The children rallied together to organize a lemonade stand, the proceeds of which will benefit the Team West Herr in the Ride for Roswell event. Jason Wabick is a salesperson for the company, and both he and his wife, Bobbie, will be riding in the event, an annual effort that raises money for Roswell through people riding varying distances throughout Western New York. Bobbie Wabick’s mother, and the children’s grandmother, is the one who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

This year, the neighborhood children hope to raise $500 through their lemonade stand, said Bobbie Wabick. It will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at the corner of Fairway Drive and Freeman Road. The lemonade and cookies will be $1 each. Sweet Annalines, a cookie business started by one of the mothers in the neighborhood, will be donating the cookies.

“When you feel it and you experience it, you tend to want to go out there and do whatever you can to make things better for the future,” said Bobbie Wabick.

“We want to help everyone, but it’s tough to do everything. We do what touches our heart.”

What may change their status from optional to standard is the introduction of cooled or ventilated seats in cars. For now, heated and cooled seats are part of option packages. For example, in the Buick LaCrosse, they are part of a $1,300 option package with leather seats and other upgrades.

Heating and cooling functions are typically paired. In the summer you will not need heated seats but may well appreciate the cooling effects of ventilated seats when hotter temperatures prevail.
