Former Auto Industry Greats

A Look Back At Some Now Defunct Automakers That People Loved

As with everything else in life, great things cannot last forever.  The auto industry is no different.  Saab recently folded and put it's name on the list of defunct automakers.

Popular Mechanics recently published an article on their favorite auto companies that no longer exist. We have a few ideas of our own.  We posted a query about it on our Facebook and Twitter pages, and our fans seem to love Saturn.  A few even mentioned DMC.  Not bad.

With that in mind we're discussing a few of our own favorites today.

Saturn

Saturn fans were true loyalists.  The brand was famous for it's laid back culture and sales approach.  We were sad when this brand went down for sure.  But if you're still a Saturn fan, we still have a few in stock and our Chevy Orchard Park location is an authorized Saturn repair center.  So if you still love Saturn, we can help you out.

Pontiac

Some great cars in this fleet for sure, including some true classics.  Bob Lutz of GM said it best about the Pontiac loss:  "A lot of great equipment went out the doors just to keep the plane flying." Pontiac was shut down in 2008 amid economic turmoil.

Oldsmobile

This one has a personal angle to it as my parents were Oldsmobile loyalists when I was growing up.  In a general sense,  though, Oldsmobile just made some fine cars.  The Oldsmobile brand was the third largest nameplate seller for much of the 1970s. In 1986 alone, Oldsmobile sold more than a million cars. A few years later, Olds produced the Aurora, a breakthrough body design.

So who did we miss?  Let us know who your favorite old auto brands were.
