Technology To AVOID Distracted Driving?
Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 3:41PM Consumer Survey Reveals Surprising Data On Technology and Driving
There has been a lot of talk about distracted driving lately, including legislation to curb it. Yet, a recent JD Power and Associates survey reveals that consumers don't want technology eliminated, they just want different ways to use it. ![]()
Of the consumers surveyed, the majority said they want automakers to develop technology that will allow them to safely make calls, get directions, and check e-mail while driving, while staying within the law. This data could easily manifest itself in demand and sales numbers.
While we've covered many of these types of devices, it seems like consumers are demanding more of them.
The study, which measured consumer interest and intent to purchase new automotive technologies (before and after learning pricing), showed that consumers are looking to automakers to find simple and effective solutions that will comply with government-imposed restrictions on the use of hand-held phones while driving.
Here's a staggering number- "86% of smartphone owners reported using their device while in their vehicle. The two most common activities are making and receiving calls as well as getting driving directions." This shows that distracted driving clearly occurs, and perhaps automakers could capitalize on the public's willingness to counter it.
The study also showed that almost 60 percent of consumers who own a portable digital music player would like to incorporate it into their car’s controls and display at a price point of $200.
So how will automakers respond? Time will tell, but it's interesting to see consumers admitting to distracted driving and a willingness to embrace ways to change it.
