THE Luxurious Compact

Chevy Cruze Offers Unique Combo of Efficiency and Comfort

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze will challenge what it means to be a compact car in North America.

"We want people to open up the door and say 'wow, I never thought I could afford a car with this type of interior," said Dave Lyon, GM's head of interior design.  Take one look at the car's design and you'll see why Lyon speaks so confidently:

Lyon says that the Cruze will accommodate everyone of every size.  The Cruze will come with LED displays, bluetooth connectivity plus instant navigation with a hard drive.

For those who have never experience such features, have no fear.  Lyon promises the system will have a simple, user friendly interface.

Design and technology are only scratching the surface in terms of the Cruze's full capbilites.  Safety and fuel economy are the true selling points of the car.

"The Cruze delivers the amenities, quietness and roominess you expect in larger, more upscale vehicles with the fuel economy of a compact,” said Margaret Brooks, Chevrolet marketing director for small cars.

In terms of safety, the Cruze will lead the compact market in standard features, including:

  • 10 air bags
  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover sensing
  • Collapsible pedal system
  • Power rear-door child safety locks
  • Standard OnStar, with a six-month subscription including Turn-by-Turn navigation

The Cruze's fuel economy is the real story.  The Cruze will get an estimated 40 MPG on the highway – hybrid-like efficiency without the hybrid cost.  Part of the reason for such efficiency is the Cruze's new unique air shutter design.

The air shutter system uses sensors to feel and sense wind and temperature conditions. The sensors are married to electric motors that open and close the shutters automatically.  With the shutters closed at high speeds, wind drag is reduced. At lower speeds, the shutters open to maximize engine-cooling air flow. The air shutter system contributes nearly half a mile per gallon in combined city and highway driving.

At West Herr, we can't wait for the Cruze.  We're even sending a few reps to check them out next month at the Chevy Plant in Lordstown, OH.  Stay tuned here or on our Twitter and Facebook pages for all the latest Cruze news.
